Summary[]
In 1982, Tam Moonshine, Mattie Jacobs Matthews, Georgie Whitman and their best friend Luke Lawrence run a childhood detective agency, investigating any number of small matters for other children and teenagers. However, tragedy strikes when Luke Lawrence's older sister, Jane, is found murdered. Her death is the latest in a string of killings. Distraught, Luke asks his friends to discover the identity of the being that killed his sister.
As they investigate, Georgie's father is falsely accused of the crime, and they learn that the killer might be in possession of Jane's lucky bracelet which was not found on her body. Seeking information about the other killings, they learn from J.D. Ackerman that the being behind those killings had been sealed away through a ritual he had performed with the aid of Sarah Cummings. Eventually they discover that Jane had had a secret older boyfriend, and following clues in her romantic poetry, seek out the location where they would meet. They learn that she was killed by a copycat killer - who had faked the post-mortem carving - to distract from the illicit love affair between a teacher and a high school student.
Distraught by the news that a person could have done something so terrible, Luke attempts to take his own life by throwing himself off the roof of the children's clubhouse in the woods. As the others rush to stop him, the log that they had always used to cross the river breaks and the children fall into a river that has reached flood stage.
When Tam wakes, she is approached by a strange being that shows her that her friends have died in the accident, and hints that Luke has already successfully killed himself. The man offers to bring them back if she agrees to leave Harper's Hill and never return. Tam agrees, and all of her friends wake to find themselves miraculously fine.
Years later, in 2017 Luke attempts to contact Tam, believing that Ackerman was wrong about the success of his ritual. However, Tam does not discover the voicemail until too late, and instead learns from George that Luke had been murdered.
George, Tam, and Matt return to Harper's Hill for Luke's funeral and try to investigate his death. They are joined by Marie Schultz, an FBI agent who briefly uses the alias of Claire West. Marie's younger sister, Sarah, had been among the victims of the serial killer in 1982 and Marie had become convinced that the man who had been blamed for the killings was only responsible for Jane's death. She is interested in Luke's death because it shares hallmarks with the killings from 1982, particularly the symbol carved into Luke.
The investigators eventually learn that Luke had attempted to perform a ritual to rid Harper's Hill of a revengeful spirit, who Luke believed to be the ghost of a little girl named Harper Langdon who had been murdered long ago. Using Luke's notes, the investigators call forth Harper's spirit and have it lead them to her remains, which they find in a forgotten and long abandoned mud hut in the forest. They are attacked by some strange monstrosity, but manage to salt and burn Harper's bones.
The next day they learn too late that all the victims had carved their intials into the oak tree at the center of town, and that Harper's spirit had been holding the true monster in check. Without this meager protection, George is attacked on his date and dragged away into the Grimmlands. The others follow through the portal the creature left behind.
They wake in the Grimmlands, having been turned to children again. They eventually save a small blackbird that they name Spitz. Spitz takes them to the Grove, where they learn that they can defeat the Bogeyman by finding three parts of his soul: Appetite, Reason, and Spirit. They recover Appetite from the barn in the graveyard, and then learn from the Butchers that Reason is in the garden and Spirit is in the pumpkin patch. The Butchers ask for a jar of souls from the Bogeyman's home in return for information about how to safely retrieve the two remaining pieces. They retrieve the jar of souls, and using the Butchers information retrieve Spirit and Reason.
The objects that represent these soul pieces are a doorknob. Upon touching them, Georgie is shown pieces of the life of a man named Danny Bannon. Danny Bannon was born in England, and in early adulthood showed signs of inappropriate interest in very young girls. Later, he was forced to flee England when he became wanted for killing children. In America, he would be confronted by Mayor Crawford of the town that would be named Harper's Hill, when he was found lurking around the church and handing out flowers to little girls, particularly Harper Langdon.
They take the doorknob to the Bogeyman's house and assemble it in an unfinished door, along with the key that they had gotten from the Ragman (who had traded all his wares for a marble from Mattie). Through the door, they find a hallway with doors that show them the deaths of several people: Luke Lawrence, Sarah Schultz, Mary Laval, Harper Langdon and finally Danny Bannon himself.
When they enter the final door, they learn that Danny Bannon had been executed by being tied to the oak tree and left to die of thirst, and his body had been left to rot there. The tree had eventually grown around his bones, until the day that Mary Laval had killed herself there. Her soul and his soul had merged to create the Bogeyman, which emerges from the tree and attacks them when Tam attempts to chop it down.
Marie realizes that Spitz is part of the Bogeyman, and immolates the bird (who was the spirit of Mary Laval) using a makeshift flamethrower from her lighter and a can of hairspray. The destruction of Mary Laval's spirit also destroys the Bogeyman, and the children flee the Grimmlands through a tunnel that appears in the hill. Mattie is unable to leave, because the marble he traded away contained part of his soul.
